Home for the Holidays & making wishes come true: The Franklin County Fiddlers at the Skye Theater, December 22

Most of you living in this part of Maine have heard our fabulous Franklin County Fiddlers, an ensemble of young musicians from Mt. Blue RSD who perform traditional and contemporary Celtic, Acadian, Appalachian and other down-home music, composed even by the students themselves.  Started in 1993 by Mr. Steve Muise, Mt. Blue RSD’s beloved orchestra teacher and real-life descendant of Acadia, the Franklin County Fiddlers never fail to bring joy to their audiences.

And here’s your chance to be their next audience!  On Thursday, December 22nd, the Fiddlers will be performing at the Skye Theater in Carthage.  Billed as Home for the Holidays, this special concert will unite and reunite past and present members of the Franklin County Fiddlers.  But there’s something else about this show that’s special:  it’s raising funds to help fulfill a wish for the future of our kids’ musical education.

At the Music Boosters’ meeting last month, Mr. Muise came to us and asked, “What if  we could give the music room at Mt. Blue Middle School the best tools technology has to offer?”  Elaborating on this question, Mr. Muise told us of the kinds of class-room technology that would allow a teacher to ‘bring to life,’ for instance, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti – not only through audio/video recordings of the world’s best musicians playing them, but through interactive demonstrations to show students how Bach actually constructed these monumental pieces, highlighting key sections of the score.  Add to that a teacher’s ability to include other multimedia to demonstrate the particular history, geography, architecture and further features of Bach’s (or any musician’s) era, and we would have a true 21st century learning tool.  Well, the Music Boosters were as excited as Mr. Muise about bringing these tools to our Middle Schoolers, and we committed to helping fulfill this wish.

We hope you will do the same, and couldn’t think of a better place to start than buying a ticket to The Franklin County Fiddlers Home for the Holidays concert.  Although the Music Boosters aren’t organizing the event, we are thrilled that Mr. Muise, Franklin County Fiddlers both old and new, and Skye Theater Director Phill McIntyre have teamed up to make it possible.  They’re making wishes come true, and so can you.

Thanks!

Thanks to those who braved the weather on Sunday and joined us for The Sound of Music.   It was joyous.  We’d like to extend a very special thanks to Narrow Gauge Cinema in Farmington, who went above and beyond in helping with this event.

If you want to get in on  more FUNdraisers, our 2nd annual Flamingo-thon is coming up in the spring.  Last year, it helped the Music Boosters raise money to pay for instrument repairs and award some summer scholarships.  Plus, it was a flock o’ fun.
Send a flock of lawn flamingos and support the Music Boosters

We’re also pondering other big-fun fundraiser ideas.  Here are some in the works:

  • A dinner-cabaret featuring local performers and delicious cuisine.
  • A bouncy tent.
  • A chick-flick night with all the brownies and ice cream you can eat.
  • (Send us your idea.)
We want to keep you informed about fun ways you can help the Music Boosters, plus news about school concerts and other performances by the fabulously talented young musicians in Franklin County.  Sign up for our e-newsletter and you won’t miss a beat!
